An ode to the baseball cap

Now that the cold weather is loosening its grip (sort of), it’s time to put those winter accessories away for another year. So in the warmer weather, how can you give your style a little boost? Easy: get a little help from the humble baseball cap.

The first baseball cap was worn in 1860 by the Brooklyn Excelsiors, a baseball team (…obviously). But the design we know today didn’t originate until the 1940s, when the visors were made longer. The baseball cap got a boost¬†in the late 80s and early 90s thanks to its association with hip-hop.

All Caps

Since then they’ve gone in and out of style, but now the baseball cap is at the height of popularity¬†once again. Particularly the ‘dad-hat’ style – the classic baseball cap with a slightly curved brim, usually paired with a sweatshirt or work shirt. There’s never been a better time to incorporate a classic baseball cap into your wardrobe. But there are a couple of things to consider before you do. First, make sure your hat fits your head. There is an adjustable strap at the back you know, so don’t have it too tight or too loose. Second: avoid slogans. With the amount of styles around, it can be hard to choose the right one. I say: keep it plain, or at least subtle, and make baseball caps great again.
